Arrival (2016)

Horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies is now available to watch on Netflix (5)

Arrival is so good that it's Denis Villeneuve's best movie, ahead of the likes of Dune: Part Two and Sicario.

The 2016 sci-fi centres on linguist Louise (Amy Adams) and physicist Ian (Jeremy Renner) who must find a way to talk to the aliens who have just arrived on Earth, in order to stave off a devastating war.

As well as engaging the brain, Arrival also tugs at the heartstrings with an ending reveal that still lingers in our brain after all these years. Watch it once, never forget it.

Top Gun: Maverick (2023)

Horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies is now available to watch on Netflix (6)

As well as being one of the best action movies on Netflix, Top Gun: Maverick deserves its place as being just one of the outright best movies on the streaming service too.

The long-awaited legacy sequel sees Tom Cruise reprise his classic role as Maverick returns to Top Gun to train up recruits, including Goose's son Rooster (Miles Teller) for a dangerous mission.

It proved worth the wait as it delivered genuinely thrilling and breathtaking action sequences, alongside a surprisingly effective emotional core. You'll definitely feel the need for speed all over again.

Lady Macbeth (2016)

Horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies is now available to watch on Netflix (7)

Florence Pugh is one of the world's biggest stars and her talent was clear from her breakthrough role in Lady Macbeth (no relation to Shakespeare).

She had made her movie debut in The Falling, but William Oldroyd's Lady Macbeth was her first lead role as Katherine, a young woman trapped in an unhappy, arranged marriage who begins to rebel against what society has planned for her.

Pugh views it as her game-changing role and it only takes one watch of the intense and unexpected Lady Macbeth to see why.

Past Lives (2023)

Horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies is now available to watch on Netflix (8)

Celine Song might have missed out on a Best Director nomination, but Past Lives rightly landed Best Picture at Best Original Screenplay nominations at this year's Oscars.

It's an achievement all the more impressive as the romantic drama marked Song's feature debut. As she's spoken about, it's a deeply personal movie, centred on the story of Nora and Hae Sung who reunite two decades later.

Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro all put in masterful performances to bring Song's beautiful script to life, resulting in a quietly heartbreaking watch.

The Favourite (2018)

Horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies is now available to watch on Netflix (9)

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone are back in Oscar contention with Poor Things, so there's no better time to look back on their previous Oscar contender The Favourite.

The black comedy saw Olivia Colman pick up Best Actress for her portrayal of Queen Anne, with Stone and Rachel Weisz being nominated for Best Supporting Actress for their roles as Sarah Churchill and Abigail Hill, respectively.

They're competing to be the Queen's favourite, setting the stage for a hilarious, dark and very rude comedy.

The Kitchen (2023)

Horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies is now available to watch on Netflix (10)

While it might be set in a near future London, The Kitchen is a dystopian sci-fi that feels extremely relevant and timely which makes it all the more impactful.

Daniel Kaluuya's feature directorial debut (which he co-directed with Kibwe Tavares) is set in a London where all social housing has been eliminated. One community remains in The Kitchen where Izi (Kane Robinson) and Benji (excellent newcomer Jedaiah Bannerman) fight to survive.

Based on the tragedy known as the Miracle of the Andes, the movie follows the crash of Uruguayan Flight 571 in the Andes on October 13, 1972, which resulted in a brutal 72-day survival nightmare for the young survivors.

Horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies is now available to watch on Netflix (14)

Jordan Peele is hard at work on his next movie, so while we wait for that to arrive, brace yourself to revisit his terrifying and brilliant debut Get Out.

It's not just one of the best horrors on Netflix, but also one of the best movies on offer regardless of genre. Even if you know exactly what Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) finds when he meets his girlfriend's (Allison Williams) parents for the first time, Get Out loses none of its ability to creep you out.

Talk to Me (2023)

Horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies is now available to watch on Netflix (15)

One of the most terrifying movies in recent memory, Talk to Me is the perfect horror movie to watch on Netflix.

Directed by Australian brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, the movie follows a group of teenagers playing a dangerous game, conjuring spirits through an embalmed ceramic hand. When they touch it and say 'talk to me', they are able not only to see spirits, but also to let them invade their bodies.

Of course, it doesn't go well for them, particularly when Mia (Sophie Wilde) breaks the rules in order to talk to her deceased mother.

The ending of Talk to Me is still haunting us, so let's hope the sequel Talk 2 Me doesn't take too long.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023)

Horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies is now available to watch on Netflix (16)

We had to wait 23 years for Ginger, Rocky and co to return, but Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget proved to be worth the wait.

Yes, we're still not quite over the recastings, yet once you get used to it, the sequel delivers the wit and warmth that you expect from an Aardman movie as Ginger and Rocky break into a chicken farm to free their daughter Molly.

While it might not be quite as good as the original (few animations are), Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will still provide fun for all the family.

Whiplash (2014)

Horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies is now available to watch on Netflix (18)

There are very few scarier things than having JK Simmons screaming "Not my tempo!" at you.

Before La La Land, Damien Chazelle delivered this high-intensity, critically-acclaimed drama starring Miles Teller. He plays Andrew, a young music student who wants to become the best jazz drummer of his generation. However, nothing has prepared him for the ruthlessness of his teacher, Terence Fletcher, whose methods tend to push his students to the absolute limit.

This tour de force between Teller and Simmons is amazing to watch, leading to an extremely stressful ending.

A heartbreaking and powerful adaptation of Emma Donoghue's novel of the same name sees Larson play Joy, a 24-year-old who's been held captive for seven years with her son Jack (Jacob Tremblay), born during her captivity.

Her performance rightly saw Larson land the Best Actress award at the Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globes.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies is now available to watch on Netflix (21)

Martin Scorsese is back on the big screen with Killers of the Flower Moon, but if you don't fancy a trip to the cinema, you can also check one of his best movies with Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Wolf of Wall Street is an outrageous and hilarious biopic that tells the story of Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) as he rose to the top of Wall Street, before a spectacular collapse which Scorsese conveys in supremely entertaining fashion.

It's another lengthy Scorsese movie clocking in at three hours, but it rattles by in such fashion that you'll never feel the runtime.
